1968-71

American engineers Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore left Fairchild Semiconductor and created a new company, NM Electronics. Later that year they acquired the rights to use the Intel name from Intelco. Three years later the company released its first microprocessor, the Intel 4004.

Games in the late '60s and early '70s

were the evening entertainment of scientists and specialists. Game consoles and arcade machines existed only in prototypes, and affordable home computers were several years away.

1978

Intel releases the 16-bit 8086 microprocessor, which soon became the industry standard.

In the late 1970s.

the gaming industry entered its first Golden Age. The arcade machine boom began, the first home computers and consoles appeared - it became possible to enjoy your favorite game at home, with your family.

1980

Intel, Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) and Xerox announce a joint ethernet project that allows computers to communicate with each other using LAN technology.

In the '80s.

MUD (Multi-user Dungeon) text adventures became popular on the computer networks of institutes and academic institutions. They allowed you to communicate with each other and participate in adventures together - in fact, it was the prototype of modern online games.

1993

Intel releases the Pentium® processor, which is 5 times more powerful than the Intel® i486™ processor and 300 times faster than the Intel® 8088 processor. The processor contains 3.1 million transistors, has an initial frequency of 66 and 60 MHz, and includes a floating point unit and two 8Kb cache memories on the chip. The processor is created using the bi-CMOS (0.8 micron) process.

In the '90s.

the second Golden Age of video games. Home PC processors became much more powerful and cheaper, sound cards and CD drives became available. Graphics in two-dimensional games began to resemble cartoons in the quality of elaboration, and developers gradually began to master 3D.

1997

Release of Intel® Pentium® processors with MMX™ technology and Intel® Pentium® II processors with 7.5 million transistors.

Second half of the '90s

was a boom in 3D games, which became much easier to develop thanks to 3D gas pedals and MMX (and later SSE) technology, which noticeably accelerated graphics computations. The first MMX-enabled game was the 1997 racing simulator POD.

2002

Intel introduces its first chip built with 0.13-micron technology on 300-mm wafers. Emergence of Intel® Hyper-Threading technology.

Hyper-Threading

Hyper-Threading technology made it possible to process two streams of computation simultaneously on a single processor - and since 2005 mass multicore processors began to appear. The ability to parallelize calculations was quickly used in games - for example, it allowed creating strategies like Empire: Total War (2009), where each soldier of many thousands of armies acts independently.

2010

Intel introduced the Intel® Core™ processor family based on a 32-nanometer manufacturing process.

In the 2010s

The Core processor family quickly gained popularity among gamers and enthusiasts. Core i7 together with flagship graphics cards provide maximum FPS in games, but for most tasks the power of cheaper Core i5 and even Core i3 is enough. And for fans of overclocking Intel has mastered the production of special models with the index K.

2020

Launch of Intel® Core™ processors for desktops and gaming systems with up to 8 physical cores of Intel® Core™ i7 processors.

Today

Developers of all games have bet on multi-core - and many high-budget titles like Battlefield V or Red Dead Redemption 2 depend on CPU performance even more than the graphics card. Technological advances have allowed a new level of recreation of iconic games of the past - remasters like Mafia, Resident Evil 3 and Call jf Duty Modern Warfare 2 and Crysis, which enjoy tremendous attention.
